Terms of Service
Last updated: 9/8/2026
Welcome to The Maker’s Familiar! These Terms of Service explain the terms that apply when you visit our website, book a sewing lesson, or purchase a service from The Maker’s Familiar.
By using this website or booking a lesson, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use the website or book our services.
1. About The Maker’s Familiar
The Maker’s Familiar is an independent sewing instruction business owned and operated by Jenny Blackwell.
We offer in-person sewing lessons designed to help students develop sewing skills in a welcoming, hands-on environment.
Our lessons are intended to be educational and instructional. While we’ll do our best to help you learn and succeed with your projects, we cannot guarantee a particular finished result.
2. Booking a Lesson
When you book a sewing lesson through our website, you agree to provide accurate and complete information, including your name and contact information.
A booking is not considered complete until payment has been successfully processed and you have received confirmation of your lesson.
Please review your booking details carefully before completing your purchase, including the date, time, and type of lesson selected.
If you notice an error in your booking, please contact us as soon as possible at jenny@themakersfamiliar.com.
3. Lesson Information
Each lesson listing will provide information about what is included, the approximate length of the lesson, the location, the price, and any supplies or equipment the student may need to provide.
Lesson content may occasionally be adjusted based on the student's experience, goals, available equipment, or the nature of the project.
Sewing is a hands-on craft, and students learn at different speeds. Our goal is to provide instruction, guidance, and encouragement while allowing you to develop your own skills and confidence.
4. Payment
All prices are listed in U.S. dollars unless otherwise stated.
Payment is due at the time of booking. Prices and lesson offerings may change from time to time, but changes will not affect a booking that has already been confirmed.
Payments are processed through the payment methods made available through our Shopify store.
5. Cancellations, Rescheduling & Refunds
Because sewing lessons are scheduled for a specific date and time, cancellations and rescheduling requests are subject to our Cancellation & Refund Policy.
Our current cancellation and rescheduling terms can be found here: Cancellation & Refund Policy.
By booking a lesson, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and agreed to those terms.
If The Maker’s Familiar needs to cancel or reschedule a lesson, we will contact you as soon as reasonably possible and provide the applicable rescheduling or refund options.
6. Student Responsibilities
Students are expected to participate respectfully and responsibly during lessons.
You agree to:
- Follow reasonable safety instructions provided during the lesson.
- Treat sewing machines, tools, equipment, supplies, and the teaching space with care.
- Ask questions whenever you are unsure how to safely operate equipment.
- Follow any specific instructions provided for the lesson or project.
- Notify us in advance of any circumstances that may affect your ability to participate safely.
Sewing involves the use of needles, pins, scissors, rotary cutters, sewing machines, irons, and other potentially hazardous tools. Students are expected to use equipment only as instructed.
7. Safety
Your safety is important to us.
Sewing lessons may involve sharp objects, hot surfaces, electrical equipment, and other ordinary hazards associated with sewing and crafting. We will provide reasonable safety instruction and guidance, but students are responsible for following those instructions and using equipment appropriately.
If you are uncomfortable using a particular tool or piece of equipment, please let us know. We are happy to help.
8. Participant Waiver
Participation in an in-person sewing lesson may require the student to review and sign a separate Participant Waiver and Release before participating in the lesson.
The waiver addresses the risks associated with participating in hands-on sewing instruction and using sewing equipment, tools, and supplies.
By booking a lesson, you acknowledge that completion of any required participation waiver is a condition of attending the lesson. If a required waiver has not been completed before the lesson, The Maker’s Familiar may decline to allow participation until the required documentation has been completed.
The Participant Waiver is a separate agreement from these Terms of Service. If there is a conflict between these Terms and the signed waiver regarding participation, safety, assumption of risk, or release of liability, the terms of the signed waiver will apply to those matters to the extent permitted by applicable law.
9. Personal Belongings
Students are responsible for their personal belongings brought to a lesson.
The Maker’s Familiar is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property except where liability cannot legally be excluded.
10. Intellectual Property
All original lesson materials, written instructions, photographs, website content, logos, branding, graphics, and other materials created by The Maker’s Familiar remain the property of The Maker’s Familiar unless otherwise stated.
Materials provided as part of a lesson are intended for the personal, educational use of the student who purchased the lesson.
Please do not reproduce, redistribute, resell, publish, or commercially use original lesson materials without prior written permission.
You are, of course, encouraged to use the skills you learn to make your own wonderful things!
11. Website Content
We make reasonable efforts to ensure that the information on our website is accurate and up to date. However, we do not guarantee that every piece of information will always be complete, current, or error-free.
We reserve the right to correct errors, update information, change lesson offerings, and modify prices or availability at any time.

We will not use identifiable photographs of you or your projects for promotional purposes without your permission.
If we would like to photograph or share your project, we will ask for permission before using the photograph for The Maker’s Familiar's website, social media, or other promotional materials.
13. Third-Party Services

Your use of those services may also be subject to the third party's own terms and policies.

14. Limitation of Liability
To the extent permitted by applicable law, The Maker’s Familiar and its owner, instructors, and representatives will not be responsible for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of this website or participation in a sewing lesson.
Nothing in these Terms is intended to exclude or limit liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited under applicable law.
15. Changes to These Terms

When we make changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the website or booking of services after changes are posted means that you accept the updated Terms.
16. Governing Law

Any disputes will be handled in accordance with applicable law.
